The International School of Penang (Uplands)

Introduction

Uplands was founded in 1955 on the top of Penang Hill (hence the name) as a British preparatory boarding school for the children of planters in Malaya during colonial rule. It was relocated to a sea-front heritage site in 1976 and moved once again in September 2006 into purpose-built facilities in the heart of Batu Feringgi, the island's famed tourist area.

The International School of Penang (Uplands) is a not for profit, private, international school for expatriate and Malaysian students. Uplands accommodates day students aged 5 - 19 years old and Boarders from 8 years and above.

With over 55 years' heritage of excellence, the School continues to provide high quality international education for children in the Southeast Asian region. Our motto: Respect for self; respect for others 

Accreditations

Uplands is an IB World School, offering the PYP at Primary, IGCSE in the Middle School and either the IB Diploma or the Cambridge A Levels at Sixth Form. Uplands is fully recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and accredited by:

  • The Council of International Schools (CIS)
  • The New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
  • The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO)
  • Cambridge International Examinations
  • Edexcel International Examinations

The School received an award from the Malaysian Ministry of Education in June 2003, recognising it as a top international school in Malaysia. Also In 2003, Uplands became an IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma and our students continue to achieve superb results and gain entry into leading Universities. The IBO authorised the school to offer its Primary Years Programme (PYP) in June 2006. In 2009 it offered the Cambridge International A Levels alongside the existing IB Diploma, as part of its commitment to quality pre-university Sixth Form program.

Uplands is also a member of the British International Schools Worldwide (BISW) through the Federation of British-style International Schools in South-East Asia (FOBISSEA) and member of the Boarding Schools Association.

School Community:

Our international School community is made up of students, parents, teaching and non teaching staff and the School board of governors. Throughout the academic year, social and community events are organized regularly to bring the School community together; to have fun in support of the School. Events such as International Food Fairs, Art Auctions and Car Boot Sales all serve to foster the spirit of being part of Uplands. Members of the Uplands Parent Teacher Association - UPTA are active in organizing these events which also help to raise funds to support students' sporting or extra-curricular activities.
