Come to MAMA’S
NYONYA CUISINE - THE TRADITONAL WAY
If you are a nyonya food lover, then you must pay a visit to this cosy little family-run restaurant in Abu Siti Lane, where you can dine in front semi alfresco or in the air-conditioned interior.
When I say family-run I mean it - Ruby, who learnt her cooking from her own Mama, serves up some good food from Penang’s most famous cuisine. The thing is, you know it’s got to be authentic, because she is doing it under the watchful eye of Mama who, although she no longer cooks, is there every day to lend a helping hand with all the painstaking nitty-gritty chores required to cook, this traditional food.
Standards are high. "I insist on checking everything that leaves the kitchen," Ruby told me emphatically, "and if it’s
not up to scratch, I reject it ".
Considering how much work goes into creating each dish, that is a bold step, and one that has stood them it good stead, as the clients keep rolling in, including some well-known celebrities like international shoe maker Datuk Jimmy Choo, Hong Kong Director Lee Ang and Wang Lee Hom, Hong Kong actor/singer.
All the old favourites are there : from Tau Eu Bak to Perut Ikan and Nyonya Fish Head Curry, and Sambal Goreng
to Ayam Ros.
Go along there and you’ll get a chance to see for yourself why they were selected as one of Asia’s Top Ten Restaurants by Wall Street Journal 2006.
